Welcome to the fourth episode of the STEM Professionals Chat, an interview series by iSTEMCare. In this episode, we bring to you the career journey of Dr. Vibhu Jain, who ventured into business and marketing after pursuing a Ph.D. in infectious disease biology. Currently, as the head of commercial marketing at Merck Life Science (Asia-Pacific region), he focuses on digital marketing and the development of customer-centric products and services for researchers. This is a dynamic role, which entails understanding scientific research approaches and the researcher’s perspective as a customer. We are presenting his career journey, challenges along the way, and some tips for aspiring STEM professionals to a career in Business and Marketing. About Dr. Vibhu Jain
Dr. Vibhu Jain has over 20 years of experience in marketing, product management, digital transformation, and biomedical research in India and abroad. Currently, Dr. Vibhu is Head of Commercial Marketing- Asia Pacific, Research Solutions at Merck Life Science. In the current role of business and marketing, Dr. Jain is responsible for developing and executing key marketing strategies, digital marketing, customer-centric program developments, and the launch of innovative products & services for the Asia Pacific research market. Before his career at Merck, Dr. Vibhu served as the Head of Marketing and Business Development at Corning Life Sciences, where he was instrumental in executing the growth strategy for the company. Dr. Vibhu holds a Ph.D. degree in Infectious diseases from CSIR-IMTECH, Chandigarh, India, where he worked on quorum sensing, the pathogenesis of Vibrio cholerae, and its interaction with Entamoeba histolytica. Later, he pursued an MBA Program from Olin Business School, Washington University in St. Louis in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. In addition, he has also completed a technology-led entrepreneurship program Marketing, Communication, Finance, and Pricing from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, India.

Nothing is pre-decided in the life of a research scientist. Explore your options at every step of your career and go with the flow.
Stay determined to achieve your goals, be passionate, and keep learning.
Identify your strengths and weaknesses, Identify a mentor with whom you can be transparent and who can impact your life in a positive manner.
Be confident about your technical expertise and problem-solving skills.
Try to view problems from multi-angle approaches. Define your career goals, be knowledgeable and deliver your knowledge.
